Pachacuti Felt and Panama Hats from Maison Amour
We have a wide range of Felt and Panama hats by Pachacuti at Maison Amour. Pachacuti is a fair trade business with the aim of sourcing directly from producers and paying a fair price for products manufactured under good working conditions. Pachacuti works principally with small-scale cooperatives, community groups, workers' associations, mothers' clubs and family workshops.
Pachacuti's Panama Hats
"Pachacuti's Panama Hats are woven and finished in the Cuenca area of southern Ecuador where we have been working with hat producers since 1993. Since 2002 we have been supporting a women's association representing over 300 weavers.
The association aims to allow the weavers access to the whole production process enabling them to retain more of the profit in the sale of the finished hat. The association also supports the weavers by providing education, training in new weaving techniques and regular meetings for advice offering a forum for workers to voice concerns and make suggestions.
We have increased the price we pay to the weavers by 30% with minimal increases to our wholesale and retail prices. We also pay additional money into a fund to support elderly weavers and to assist with medical costs. We are aiming to set up a programme to renovate some of the weaver's homes which are currently near to falling down."
